This medicine has been prescribed for you. Do not pass it on to others. It may harm them, even if their symptoms are the same as yours.
How to take
- Take propafenone on a regular schedule to get the most benefit from it. Do not miss any doses.
- Missed dose: Taking as soon as possible if remembered within 4 hours; not taking if remembered later; not doubling doses.
- Seeing the physician regularly to check progress of therapy.
- Caution if any kind of surgery (including dental surgery) or emergency treatment is required.
- Caution when driving or doing things requiring alertness because of possible dizziness.
Dosage and Administration
Usual adult dose:
Initiate therapy with propafenone 150 mg given every 8 hours. Dosage may be increased at a minimum of 3 to 4 day intervals to 225 mg every 8 hours (U.S. labeling) or 300 mg every 12 hours (Canada labeling). If additional therapeutic effect is needed, the dose of propafenone may be increased after an additional 3 to 4 days to 300 mg every 8 hours.
Warnings and Precautions

Before taking this medicine, tell your doctor:
If you have hypersensitivity to propafenone
If you are pregnant, trying for a baby or breast-feeding
If you are taking other medication, especially:
If you have other medical problems, especially:
- Cardiogenic shock
- Congestive heart failure
- Sinus Bradycardia
- Atrioventricular block
- Sick sinus syndrume
Warnings
Take propafenone exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
- Pregnancy Category C. There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women.
- This medication passes into breast milk and may have undesirable effects on a nursing infant. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
Side/Adverse Effects
Along with their useful effects, most medicines can cause unwanted side-effects although not everyone experiences them. These usually improve as your body adjusts to the new medicine, but speak with your doctor or pharmacist if any of the following side-effects continue or become troublesome.
The more frequent side effect is ventricular arrhythmias.
Incidence less frequent
Angina (Chest Pain); Bradycardia (Slow Heartbeat), Congestive heart failure (Shortness of breath, swelling of feet or lower legs, weight gain)
Storage
- Store between 15 and 30 c in a tight container.
- Keep this medicine out of the reach of children.
